The Degrees Of Freemasonry

Freemasonry consists of three main degrees, each with its own distinct teachings and symbolism. These degrees are:

Entered Apprentice Degree: This is the first degree in Freemasonry, where candidates are introduced to the basic principles and rituals of the Craft. It emphasizes the importance of initiation, moral virtue, and the pursuit of knowledge. The Entered Apprentice Degree lays the foundation for further exploration and growth within Freemasonry.

Fellowcraft Degree: The Fellowcraft Degree is the second degree in Freemasonry. It builds upon the lessons learned in the Entered Apprentice Degree and delves deeper into the symbolism and allegory of the Craft. It emphasizes the importance of intellectual growth, education, and the pursuit of truth.

Master Mason Degree: The Master Mason Degree is the highest degree in Freemasonry and represents the culmination of a Mason’s journey within the Craft. It further explores the themes of morality, brotherhood, and personal growth. The degree symbolizes the attainment of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. Master Masons are entrusted with the secrets and symbols of Freemasonry and are expected to exemplify its principles in their daily lives.

The Entered Apprentice Degree

The Entered Apprentice degree is the first degree in Freemasonry and serves as an initiation into the fraternity. It is often referred to as the “first step” or the “foundation” of a Mason’s journey.

During the Entered Apprentice degree ceremony, candidates go through a series of rituals and symbolic teachings that are designed to impart moral and ethical lessons. These teachings are presented through allegories, symbols, and dramatic reenactments.

The degree emphasizes the importance of self-improvement, the pursuit of knowledge, and the development of moral character. It encourages candidates to reflect on their actions, to strive for personal growth, and to be of service to others.

The rituals and symbols used in the Entered Apprentice degree have deep historical and philosophical significance. They draw from various sources, including biblical stories, architectural symbolism, and ancient initiation rites.

After completing the Entered Apprentice degree, candidates are considered members of the fraternity and are entitled to attend Lodge meetings, participate in Masonic activities, and engage in further degrees and Masonic education.

It is important to note that the specifics of the Entered Apprentice degree can vary slightly between different Masonic jurisdictions and lodges. However, the core teachings and principles remain consistent across the Masonic fraternity.

In this degree, Freemasons are encouraged to expand their understanding of the arts and sciences, and to seek further enlightenment through study and contemplation. The Fellowcraft Degree also emphasizes the importance of building strong moral character and cultivating a sense of personal responsibility.

Through rituals and allegorical teachings, the Fellowcraft Degree aims to inspire Freemasons to improve themselves and contribute positively to society. It encourages individuals to strive for excellence, seek truth, and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Overall, the Fellowcraft Degree is a significant step in a Freemason’s journey, promoting personal growth, intellectual development, and moral character. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of knowledge and the importance of living a virtuous and meaningful life.

In addition to these three degrees, there are also higher degrees in Freemasonry, often referred to as “appendant bodies” or “side degrees.” These higher degrees are offered in various Masonic organizations and focus on specific areas of study or specialized rituals.
